1980 Championship Wrestling from Memphis, TN

Here are the week by week listings for Memphis TV in 1980. As always, WMC air dates are listed first with the syndicated air date in (parenthesis). All these listings are from the syndicated feed that aired in Louisville so there is definitely Memphis-specific content missing.

1980 is notable for a number of things. First and foremost you have the roots of Jerry Lawler's turn and feud with Jimmy Hart. Also, you have Bill Dundee as the top guy for much of the year and he carries the promotion nicely. There are major turns from Tommy Rich and Jimmy Valiant, plus the emergence of guys like Bobby Eaton and Koko Ware. This really set the tone for the decade nicely.

Battle royal to decide TV Champion. FYI, instead of a belt you get an actual TV. Comes down to Jimmy Valiant, Koko Ware & Danny Davis. Koko accidently nails Valiant allowing Davis to pin Jimmy. Then Koko small packages Davis for the win. Jimmy Valiant is not happy at all. He cuts a promo on Koko and repeatedly tells Lance to shut up. Out of spite he smashes Koko's new TV, then beats the stew out of Koko and spits on him.
Louisville promo: Lance runs down the card
Eddie Marlin announces that Koko is the TV Champ and that Jimmy Valiant will be fined $500 to buy Ware a new TV. In addition, Eddie has a special request from Tommy Rich's mother Peggy to speak. Lance asks everybody to be respectful to Peggy (and they are). Peggy says Tommy is not the bad guy everybody thinks he is. She talks about how he got started and how he left Memphis to build a name for himself. He wasn't the same when he came back because he felt the people didn't accept him as a star. Peggy is on the verge of tears as she talks about how only the fans can help Tommy get back to what he was. Jimmy Valiant & Tojo Yamamoto come out. Valiant is still in a rage and he calls Peggy a fat slob. Tommy Rich then comes out to save his mom and gets beaten bloody. Peggy tries to stop the carnage but gets thrown to the ground by Tojo & Valiant. After the new heels are run off, Peggy weeps cradling her son's bloody head in her arms. She's taken away by Eddie Marlin as Jimmy Hart and Bobby Eaton tend to Rich. Rich is incensed that Hart didn't back him up. Jimmy says Rich should be ashamed for letting his old fat mother make fool out of him. Tommy throws Hart to the ground and fires him. He then tells Eaton he's through with him too for standing with Hart. Angle of the year in Memphis.
